"Chronicles of Upper Burnet" (1)

Tuesday, November 16th.

A day like yesterday, excepting the snow which came last night and staid all day. It was very slight however. Till noon
Father and Alvin made doors for the cow-barn (or "church" as it is to be entitled) and hung them while I chored around.
After dinner Alvin and I went down into the field south of the rye-patch and gathered part of a load of corn. At night I
again went to hear the Rev. Runyan preach this time on the Remisssion of Sins. He completely (in his own estimation
at least) killed and buried every ism but Campbellism;74 destroyed the witness of the spirit as efficacious evidence,
established the necessity of baptism for remission and was rewarded with three female "jiners"

Teaching Notes: Ask your students why they might be naming the new cow barn, "church." Probable answers
might be that once the cows are in their stanchions, they might appear to be sitting in pews in a church. Another
answer might be that if someone asked where they were going or where they had been, they could answer, "to church" or
"at church." It sort of reminds me of a bar in Terre Haute, Indiana, that was named "The Office."
